The other day, someone at work pointed out that it does not make sense that smoking has been banned on the whole campus, but our building is surrounded by busy roads with cars and trucks spewing out carbon monoxide. This person said (in a thick Eastern European accent), “if Americans want to be so bloody healthy, they should stop driving their cars.”
I realize that this criticism is just bitterness because he himself could not smoke, but he makes a good point. Don’t get me wrong, smoking is a very important public health issue, but breathing car exhaust isn’t good either.
Columbus does not have a rail system or a subway, only busses. I love traveling to cities with good public transport. It’s a more relaxing way to travel, and uses far less energy. Not only that, you get good excerise from walking to and from the stops.
I live in a suburb about 30-45 minutes from my job. A bus does come out this far. One day I’m going to ride it in just to see what that is like.
